The pacing inevitably feels rushed, and it certainly feels like the Old Man Logan universe could be explored in more detail, but as is, this is a highly enjoyable future Wolverine read. For example, I know that two Joss Whedon shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, were continued as graphic novels after they went off the air. As far as categorisation goes, the article suggests the “most exciting comics” of today are characterised by “a broader, more accessible spread of themes than the super-books’ endless exploration of power and its consequences.” (14) A wide variety of genres is mooted, but the “Top Ten!!” for new readers to start with continues Harrison’s contention that the best new comics “are fuelled by the pulpy, pop-art immediacy and sense of wonder” (14) that made comics so popular earlier in the twentieth century.

Organized thematically it explores the various genres of the comic book - including humour, adventure, girls' comics, underground and alternative. The interesting thing about this is that apart from Dale Evans, no actual movie cowgirl ever had her own comic except for Reno Browne. (There were Annie Oakley TV comics and imaginary character comics such as Black Phantom, a masked cowgirl friend of Red Mask). All the stories use kana (phonic) characters next to the kanji (Chinese characters), which makes them readable for the younger or less literate Japanese and useful for students of the language.
