In 1864 he wrote a Mass in d minor for chorus and orchestra which clearly showed Wagner’s influence. It offers modern listeners a denser texture than the monophonic one found with the sequence, and in this piece Bruckner allows the contrapuntal lines to support each phrase of this familiar text. Indeed upon inspection there are connections between Mahler's 1st and Shostakovich's 4th symphonies. The favor of personal acquaintance with Bruckner was not granted me, but that Vienna, into the musical life of which I entered as a young conductor, was still full of the most lively memories of him. His family connections allowed him to avoid the draft in the war. A devout Catholic who loved to drink beer, Bruckner was out of step with his contemporaries.

Winifred Wagner (23 June 1897 – 5 March 1980) was an English woman and wife of Siegfried Wagner, Richard Wagner’s son. Davies leads the renowned ensemble in pieces by Duke Ellington and Samuel Barber and a new work by Philip Glass, his Symphony No. 11, commissioned by Davies in honor of Glass' 80th birthday. Horenstein�s is an epic, live reading, captured at the Henry Wood Promenade concerts in 1971. He didn’t receive widespread European acclaim for his talent until a three-year tour started in Vienna in 1828 and hit every major city from Germany to Poland to Bohemia.
