It was published in November 2013 for distribution to subscribers and supporters, and went on general release in May 2014. Standard field guides just don’t have enough space to provide all the plumage variations and differences among juveniles and adults. Crows are adaptive, intelligent, and abundant; they are found pretty much everywhere in all kinds of habitats. This has brought me to the conclusion that this is the right moment to publish a tool that could share most of the useful information needed to travel and look for birds in Ecuador.

I like the "quick index" inside the back cover, which takes you to the first page of each "family", e.g. honeyeaters, quails, etc. Notice the habitat in which the bird lives (marsh or beach). Only the very specific bird guides have that kind of knowledge. This 285-page book covered considerably more species than Mathews’s book. The books officially go on sale March 29th, and from that date through May I’ll be traveling to lots of bookstores, nature centers, and bird festivals to talk about them.
